Utilization of datacenter modules

The simulation will show utilization of datacenter modules (eg. application servers, database servers) during day.

Assignment

  • Project name: Utilization of datacenter modules
  • Author: Ondřej Kadečka
  • Software used: NetLogo

Background

  • Typical datacenter consists of numerous servers which we can divide into few categories(modules) based on their primary function.
  • We can observe different usage of specific services during day.
  • Live load balancing of servers is availible thanks to virtualization

Goal of the simulation

Show typical load of each module during day and identify potential bottlenecks. It will be also possible to observe peak time of each module. Observe load balancer function during day.

It could be potentialy promising, however it is necessary to elaborate the assignment into more detailed form. This way I can imagine to solve it either using discrete event simulation or agent based simulation. It is also necessary to mention where you will tap data, etc. Tomáš 11:00, 16 December 2014 (CET)

I vould like to solve it as agent based simulation. I was also looking for options where to get data, but it's quite difficult to find relevant real measurements so detailed... I would opt to use some real statistics eg. Facebook usage, number of Tweets, power consumption of Google/Facebook datacenters and somehow aproximate it into hypothetical usage data needed in this simulation. --Kado00 15:41, 23 December 2014 (CET)

It is necessary to elaborate the assignment. I still don't understand how it should look like. Perhaps, you have an idea how it should look like, but it is not apparent from the assignment. You plan make it as an agent based model. What will be the agents? What will be their actions. relationships... It is also necessary to have a clear idea, where you will get your source data. How would you like to proceed without this? Please, work this out. Tomáš 22:00, 23 December 2014 (CET)
